Durham Sk8 Park to be Completed by end of <del>September ’09</del> November ’09.

I stopped by the park this afternoon. Two guys were working on it. They were in charge of all of the walls, stairs and rails. They seemed to be doing a good job… although I am not completely convinced that they knew what they were doing… They asked me how I like the stairs to be…. I told them as long as there are not any bumps or cracks at the top, they’ll be fine.

Finishing Date? They told me it should be done by the end of September. They had fallen behind because of some of the paper work, and they have been running into the foundation of an old building while digging. But he fully expected that they would catch up.

Take a look at some of these pictures. If you look closely, you can see the “skate-able art” with the circular coping already going up (the big circle coping).

Just heard from a city official with Parks and Rec that the park won’t be open until the end of October.

Really? That is surprising. It is really coming along, I wouldn’t be surprised if it was open at the end of September.

There is no way this will be finished this month. They made hardly any progress this past week. The main part of it is not too far from completion, mostly just needing flat concrete to be poured, However, a good chunk of the park doesn’t even have the ground leveled (if you look at the design image, I’m referring to everything left of the floating quarterpipe)

it may be a while from being completely finished, but it’s getting skated alot already. There were at least 12 people there last night skating the ‘clam.’

Yup, it is being skated now, but will someone please volunteer to bring a big broom. I fell 3 times because I hit rocks and nails. It’s pretty sketch now.

I spoke with the mayor last week and he said it was going to be finished first week of November.

The Official Grand Opening is Saturday November 7th. This last weekend was lost due to rain, but just went by today and there are only 2 guys out there working!!! They need to step it up a notch if they want to be done by the 7th.

I’d like to take a group of middle schoolers over to the park as part of a field trip tour of that area.

Is there anyone in Durham who might be willing to volunteer a demo for about 30 minutes? I know I have some skateboarders in my class, but there will undoubtedly be a problem with letting them demo on a school field trip
