No helmets or pads

Word on the street is that the Durham Skate Park will not be requiring helmets OR pads!!

I was at Ujamaa Boardhouse in Downtown Durham on Saturday. The owner (sorry, forgot his name) told me that the city will not be requiring helmets or pads. It seems like he has been pretty involved in the process considering his brother is married to the mayor’s daughter (or something like that). So I believe him.

If you don’t believe him, go here and sign the petition.

This is good news for everybody except dead beat parents. Parents need to be responsible for their children wearing helmets and pads, NOT the city of Durham. They also need to be responsible for raising kids that are not wusses. So suck on that. Its not that I’m opposed to wearing a helmet and pads… in fact, it’s a really good idea to wear them. But I don’t need the city of Durham to force them on me.

On another note. The owner of Ujamaa is super nice. All of you should definitely pay him a visit when you are downtown next time. They’re at 111 W. Parrish St.

So, how are they going to keep Bikers out? That is a must for a park like this. Any news about a fence/Turnstile?

not to burst your bubble but that helmet and pad law is a STATE law, the city of durham doesn’t really have any right to change that.

i think its great if they can get by without it, i think its a personal decision whether or not to pad up, but don’t be surprised if the state pulls rank and requires them, just like the raleigh park it may be a situation where its enforced off the bat and then they let it slide, we haven’t seen a pad nanny in a long time and i think thats great.

i’ve said it before and i’ll say it again if folks really want parks to be pad free they need to talk with their state representatives. the individual cities really have no pull on this.

@Oakcity it’s not a state law that a skatepark require pads and a helmet, its a state law that if they require helmet and pads, they aren’t liable for injuries.
do some research on a subject before you profess to know something about it.
