Its hard to tell what dimensions will actually be from this picture, but the pool looks too curvy and like the transitions will be too tight to actually skate effectively. Also, while I can apreciate the city wanting the skatepark to be aesthetically pleasing, a lot of things seem to sacrifice practicale skateability in order to look all artsy farty. Like the quarterpipe for instance; would it not be much more utilitarian and get more use if just had one level of flat coping rather than that tri-level tripple coping thing? At least it will make for some good photos.
I agree with Dave about the artsy farty type design… However, I do know that the bowl and the rest of the transitions will be done by the same peeps that did the new park in raleigh. And those transitions are pretty great… So I’m not worried about the bowl. But I am worried that there might not be anything for the beginners here. I guess it depends on how high the rails are on the stairs.
Pillar designs is the low bid designer and their work shows it! Artisan does sloppy work, look at the finish in Raleigh. Many kinks in the transitions.
The Durham design is the most pathetic I have ever seen! The city does not listen and has a design based on the amount of money available. Stairs are cheap, tranny is expensive. Where is the wow factor? Why drive, risk your life (location sketchy) to skate below average park? How long before local artists paint gang symbols
Agree with other posters about artsy portion. A well designed skatepark is artsy.
This will be better than prefab crap, original plan, but still gives P&R department an out when no skates the park.
Charlotte selected the correct design build team but struggles with the full pad issue
Old School:
This skate park is obviously not for people who think that downtown Durham is a place that jeopardizes one’s life. And if the area is that sketchy, do you think the people who live there (me! Trinity Park. Look it up, it’s a nice neighborhood) care about the design? No. So just drive back over to wherever it is that your life is safe and the skate parks are perfect.
I really don’t think it is a sketchy area at all. Downtown Durham is on the way up. Also, the park in Raleigh is pretty sick and I think the transitions are fine. And how could you not care about the design Bull City Pride? You must not skate…
old school,
the kids are drooling over this place and i (in my late 30′s) am super pumped. the raleigh park is great, i don’t know where all the kinks are that you are referring to since raleigh is fast and smooth.
if you don’t like a park that you have never skated, then don’t show up. go skate your wally holiday flow parks with your pad nanny friends. this park will be fun, tight, with a lot of lines.
oh yeah, what a sketchy part of town it’s in, the farmers market, police station across the street, and dangerous skaters are all ready roaming the area. stay away, go pay to skate in some safe, fenced in park.
finally, i don’t know how you can say the city didn’t listen since the feedback from the public meeting where they asked people what they wanted trended towards skate plaza with transition. well, what we have here is a skate plaza style park with a pool and other transition. seems like the city and the designer and the builder have listened to the majority. just because they didn’t build exactly what you wanted doesn’t mean they didn’t listen.
please don’t come skate the durham park and ruin the fun vibe everyone else will be having.
BIKES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It looks good at a glance but there are problems. Like that bowl/quarter pipe thing. Doesn’t look like there is much of an approach, so no speed an no cool tricks. Some one could air out of that thing into the bowl if there was room to get speed. All the rails in the pictures are square which is great for skateboarders and not so good for the few rollerbladers in the area. Also, all the rails will be way to short. It would be nice to have a couple longer rails. And that triple coping thing on top of the quarter pipe is totally stupid. The patches that look like there suppose to be grass are a good indication that someone might be stupid since grass turns into dirt and wet dirt is known as mud. These guys did a bad job in raleigh too. The bowl there is so big that most of the skaters don’t skate it, which isn’t good for a public park. These parks should be designed so that everyone can get the most enjoyment out of it. If they’re going to spend thousands of dollars of taxpayers money they should make more than a half-assed effort and hire people who know how to build skateparks. That being said, I can’t wait to skate this park.
I like the concept. Any street-oriented theme is better than a ton of ramps and bowls that only a few people skate. (Sorry tranny dogs, I love what you do, but we need to cater to what most people skate.)
That ramp-to-ramp-with-rails thing at the side would only take up space; lose that!
The satellite-dish thing has got to go, too.
Needs more simple, basic ledges.
Needs more things from the actual street. Lost the really weird stuff.
Put it in a nicer part of town? Not if you want the thing built at all.
Great idea. Needs work, but I’m sure it will be awesome.
SD
artsy fartsy????
last time i checked skateboard was ART, and not a sport. seeing as you do it at your own will and style, has no objective other than fun and love.
furthermore, complain like a bitch that its not your perfect idea of a park. pleasing ALL the masses, including the little street kids to the fat older cruisers, is HARD.
be happy with what we’re getting. or cry like a bitch and go skate p 58.
and about not having a manual pad. last time i checked THE EARTH was a manual pad. stop crying.
Yeah Noah, your right. We should all just shut up. Who are we to have opinions and how dare we vocalize them. In fact, were do we find the audacity to flaunt our vitality and leisure by skating in the first place. We should all just sit quietly and think about how lucky we are to exist.
All i can say is, This park is looking like its going to be pretty sick! The quarter pipe with the Triple copping = Good times / WoooooT ! If you cant skate it dont! But also don’t knock it cause that is what skateboarding is all about fellas! Skate awkward / hard to skate obstacles, and when you take the skills that you have learned on them to a “normal” tranny, you will definately KILL IT! The satelite dish looks hella tight! and the bowl is pure sickness in the essence! And they put in some stairs, rails, ledges, banks and pretty much everything to cater to every type of skating done today! You guys need to loosen up, learn how to skate any obstacle that you are put in front of! and in the imortal words of my homie “Nick-Da-Rasta” (owner of Ujamaa boardhouse) STOP DA BLOOD-CLOT CRYING”
Shut up and skate! PEACE!!
El-Da-Blunted!!
dude i agree with daniel. if you dont like it, dont come. Bull city is the best city. live it with pride. i know imma be here everyday if possible. This park looks sick!
btw hell yes trinity park rules, look it up….. now.
Can’t we just be happy that the city is putting in a skate park? I’ve never seen so many friggin whiny babies! I would have died for one when I was groiwng up!
Toban: I do skate, I’m just ecstatic to have a park that i can skate to (and i still think looks pretty sweet/funky) as opposed to driving to Raleigh or that shithole we call the Wheels skatepark (no offense wheels, you’re all I’ve had for years, but it sorta sucks)
Bull City Pride 2: Thanks mah nigga. Represent.
people need to stop crying. the place is a free park where you dont have to wear pads. ive skated it and even though some of the things there are not perfect, its still fun. when is anything perfect out on the streets? almost never, if you people found the same stuff out on the streets, you would be flipping out and saying how perfect it is. stop crying and go skate. at least the city built you guys a free park. fayetteville wont even lift a finger for the skateboarders. you people are lucky as hell to have what you have.
oooo shit, i skated here last weekend, its not all the way done, but still totally made my weekend!!!!
Bull City Pride: dude and were skating here on saturday, for the grand opening, your in, chris is coming too.
i hope that oldschool has been going by the park in the evenings. the place allready has 20-30 people skating it daily. looks like you were wrong about nobody liking it. the wow factor is that people want to ride the park. no cookie cutter wally holliday stuff. look at all his designs, you see the same thing over and over. the durham park is well built, fun, and the grand opening is going to be huge. bowl trolls and street heads both like it.
I can’t believe some of these negative posts. Really. How can you bitch about a free all concrete park? As for people crying about the Raleigh park, and the bowl being unskateable; Wear some pads and get out and practice, and if you put the effort in, you will be able to skate it. The Raleigh park is gnarly. No one progresses on little, mellow tranny that limits what you can do. Artisan sucks have never poured concrete in their lives, much less shaped it. I’m an old dude that just recently started skating again within the last 2 years and I go out and charge it, have fun, and progress all at the same time. Much respect to Artisan and the cities of Durham and Raleigh doing it right and building GOOD parks for the people who want to progress in their skating. To all the whiners-go skate a curb.
I mean to say anyone who thinks Artisan sucks have never poured…
And if you want to see how VERY skateable the park is gonna be, come see Toy Machine rip it up on Nov 7th.
hey this shit is pretty bangin idk why yall are trippin over details. it looks fun as hell. sure maybe it could be a little better but at least your city is building you a place to skate thats hassle free. its not even a park its a plaza you should feel lucky to have one because most people have to drive a long way to get to a plaza
Dude half of you guys that commented on this post dont even skate. i can tell. and how can you say its a bad park and start bagging on it when it hasnt even opened yet and you havent even got a chance to skate it yet. All you guys should not be complaining cus YOUR city just built you a FREE kickass skate park… so stop whining. you have nothing to complain about. All you people putting up negative posts and dissing this area and park are a bunch of bitches. i mean, c’mon! its a free concrete park. if your crying, whining and bitching about this then you shouldnt be even considered a real skater. skaters take what they are given and shred.
if you dont like it then dont fucking come to the park! cus nobody wants to hear a bunch of dicks bitch about a brand new free park built in the middle of the city. i know ima be there as much as possible.
It’s a pretty great park… they really pulled it together.
that satellite dish reminds me of the one that used to be in raleigh
Where’s the bathroom? Durham Central Park ain’t gonna open theirs for ya! Better go before you flow…Losers
The bathrooms at the Police substation across the street are open to the public.
